Do you know what Tequila is actually made from?

First, let’s start from the beginning: The name Tequila is derived from the serene town of the same name in western Mexico. The base for every Tequila is the Mexican Agave Tequilana Weber Variedad Azul, also known as blue Weber Agave or Agave Azul. There are over 270 different types of agave, but only the blue Weber Agave is allowed for the production of Tequila.

The Blue Weber Agave is the source for every Tequila in the world.

This is subject to strict regulations from the Mexican government, which must comply with the Normas Oficial Mexicana (NOM). The blue Weber Agave not only grows in the vicinity of the town of Tequila in the Mexican state of Jalisco but also in Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. These five states alone are designated regions and have the authorization to produce genuine Tequila.

The original Tequila that gave SALITOS its distinctive taste comes from the nutrient-rich Jalisco region where the Mexican volcano Colima stands. Due to the existing infrastructure, fertile soils, and ideal climate, Jalisco is the region from which approximately 80% of the produced Tequila originates. The lemon trees and flower fields in the vicinity enrich the fermentation of the Agave since they lead to a natural fermentation process and thus impart a unique flavor complexity to the Tequila. The SALITOS Tequila distillery “Agave Azul San Jose” has been dedicated to this traditional craft for four generations.
